Prosjektbeskrivelse: Today there is an increased demand on the food industry to ensure food safety. At the same time the whole food chain is becoming more and more complex since various products, materials, different processing steps etc. are involved, with the consequence that possible sources for microbial contamination are various. This complexity makes it difficult to trace microbial safety problems that occur in final products back to their origin: Due to the high number of potential sources it is therefore a tedious work to find the origin of a problem and draw conclusions from it. In an ongoing project we have developed a tool (FTIR spectroscopy) for microbial source tracking in food industry. The spectroscopic data is chemical fingerprinting data of microorganisms.

Every spectral fingerprint contains approx. 2000 measurement variables. In the database, a microorganism may be represented with several spectra. This is due to the fact that different spectroscopic methods are used and that microorganisms are cultivated in different but defined conditions. In addition to the spectroscopic data we also need to store information about the origin of microorganisms (where it was sampled, e.g. in troubleshooting in industry), and pictures from microscopy of the microorganism.

The database will be used to store the spectroscopic data and to build classifiers for species or genera of microorganisms. The database should be accessible both from the spectroscopic instruments and from Matlab.

Hva gjør denne oppgaven nyttig/interessant? The database will – when successful – be a prototype for a microbial source tracking database that can be used in industry for troubleshooting by FTIR spectroscopy. Industry (Elopak) is involved in the project.
